Do we really need more Stuff?
Most of the time the answer to that question is A BIG NO! We have access to more gadgets, gizmos, and other junk than any other time in history and what is the result? Bulging landfills, increased pollution, an exploited workforce, failed subsidies, out-of-control greenhouse gases, loss of biodiversity, depleted natural resouces, and over fished oceans, just to name a few. And this all for the sake of an overall decrease in our happiness level.
Most people in the first world throw away more each year than those in the third world have in their lifetime. As a whole, these injustices span beyond the important treatment of people and animals to the spheres (atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, aquasphere – the very systems) in which we humans call our home. More than ever, we need to find contentment in a lifestyle that is sustainable, not only for the planet, but also for our pocketbooks. If you haven’t watched The Story of Stuff, you should stop what you’re doing and watch it now!
So why does Eco Lifestyle Solutions promote more purchasing?
First, we would be the first to tell you – if you don’t need it, then don’t buy it. Obviously we have to buy some necessities just to survive. In addition, there are products that increase our awareness of personal and planet restoration, and therefore enhance our personal sustainability or eco lifestyle. There are also products that save us money or help us live healthier lives, products that help us spend less on energy or have cleaner drinking water for example. Items that promote our eco lifestyle values are the products that we will support.
How do we choose the products we offer?
Every product promotes passes through our values filter. We realize there are millions of consumer products to choose from and just as many places to buy them. Yet, because we believe in Sustainable Consumption, a Simple Lifestyle, and Zero Waste, we only offer products we feel will enhance or support a person’s eco lifestyle.
Why trust the products we offer?
There are an increasing number of websites offering metrics on products you buy everyday and it is not our intension to re-create this kind of system. Instead, we will only offer products that are at the top of these lists. In addition, we take every possible product and its creators through a rigorous testing to only offer the most sustainable items.
What values or concepts are part of the filter?
Cradle-to-Cradle, Zero Waste, Organic, Local, Fair Trade, Closed-loop Production, Sustainable, . . . these are a few of our filters.
